The Pondicherry Veterinary College later rechristened as Rajiv Gandhi College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (RAGACOVAS) is now renamed as the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Veterinary Education and Research (RIVER). The Pondicherry Veterinary College Society (PVCS) is governed by the Board of Governors headed by Thiru.S.Velmurugan as the Chairman. There are 12 Members on the Board of Governors with the Secretary (Animal Husbandry and Animal Welfare), Government of Puducherry as the Vice-Chairman and the Dean as Member-Secretary. A General Body with 13 members with Secretary (Animal Husbandry and Animal Welfare) to Government of Puducherry as the Chairman, is the ultimate authority.Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Veterinary Education and Research is fully funded by the Government of Puducherry.
Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Veterinary Education and Research (RIVER) is spread over an area of 59 acres at Kurumbapet, Puducherry and located about 7 kms from the main town. The campus is divided into Zone A which is the Main Campus housing the Administrative Block, Academic Blocks, Central Library, Instructional Farm Complex, Fodder Demonstration Farm, Canteen, Students' Cooperative Store and Aviary cum Fish Pond; Zone B located also at Kurumbapet has the student hostels for boys and girls, gymnasium and the staff residential quarters..Zone C located at Mettupalayam is about 2 kms from Zone A where the Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex (TVCC) functions. Since its inception the college has made a spectacular progress owing to the excellent support extended by the Board of Governors and the Government of Puducherry.
The academic departments have been established as per the mandatory stipulations of the Veterinary Council of India (VCI) and the current faculty strength is 56. The faculty are from reputed colleges and institutions of the country. The VCI has recognised the BVSc & AH degree program offered by this college with effect from 25/11/1999, the day the first batch of students completed their five year course. The BVSc&AH awarded by this college is included in the First Schedule of Indian Veterinary Council (IVC) Act.
Each year the college admits 60 students , of which 30 are admitted through the Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC), Government of Puducherry. The remaining seats are allotted to candidates selected by the Veterinary Council of India, apart from those selected by respective Union Territories. Foreign Nationals, NRI/NRI Sponsored individuals are also admitted based on their +2 marks and an Entrance Exam. The college is truly multi-ethnic and multinational given the fact that the students are drawn from different parts of the country and across the globe.
The college also offers Post graduate Program (Master of Veterinary Science-MVSc) in eight disciplines namely Veterinary Pathology, Veterinary Biochemistry, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension, Veterinary Microbiology, Livestock Products Technology, Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Clinical Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Surgery.
